Kit Mikayi is a remarkable rock formation with cultural and historical significance located about 29 kilometres west of Kisumu in Seme, Kisumu County, for the Luo community. “Kit Mikayi” means “the stone of the first wife” in Luo. It reflects local folklore and traditions.
Standing at approximately 70 metres high, this breathtaking rock formation comes in second after the great lake of Victoria in Kisumu County Kenya. It is also one of the top 10 recommended areas to visit for anyone looking to tour Kenya.
Historical and Cultural Significance of Kit Mikayi
Kit Mikayi is a natural wonder and a sacred site for the Luo people. Ombuyu Ngeso, a local community member, told us that the place was named Kit Mikayi after a man fascinated with the stone and decided to make it his sacred home where he would spend most of his years.
The man had six wives, but he had a particular room within the historical stone with a specific spot where the man would take his rest. Of the six wives, the first wife, Mikaye, would be in charge of all the domestic affairs. According to Ogeso, any wife with an issue could not seek an audience directly from the man except the first wife Mikaye, who would report any serious issues.
Due to this man’s love for the historical stone, the locals decided to name it after Mikaye his first wife. “Kit” is a translation of stone in the Luo language the stone became “Kit Mikaye”.
The structure is also viewed as a representation of a traditional Luo polygamous family, with each rock symbolizing different wives in a homestead: Mikayi (the first wife), Nyachira (the second), and Reru (the third).
The site serves as a venue for important rituals and ceremonies, including animal sacrifices during times of calamity, such as drought or famine. Elders conduct these rituals to seek blessings and ensure bountiful harvests, reinforcing its role as a spiritual hub for the community.
The rock formation consists of large, precariously balanced boulders, creating an awe-inspiring sight. This unique geological feature has been shaped by natural erosion over thousands of years, adding to its mystique and allure.
During our visit, we were immediately struck by the impressive arrangement of the enormous towering stone formation from a distance, which rises majestically from the lush green plains.
The area offers a relaxing atmosphere filled with a sense of tranquillity. Navigating the rocky trails creates a serene backdrop with unbothered monkeys in the trees.
Besides the scenic view, locals perform rituals and offer prayers at various spots within the historic rock. The place has unforgettable experiences intertwined with nature, culture, and spirituality.
Our hike through the caves within the rock was adventurous, involving light rock climbing, which added an exhilarating element to our visit.
I observed bats flying overhead in the dark, cool caves, offering a fascinating experience. I felt a deep connection to nature, and the stories passed down through the generations.
The panoramic view from the vantage points was stunning, and I could see expansive plains stretching out in various directions. One of my highlights is the interaction with locals eager to share the story about the historic rock.
Almost on top of the rock is a breathtaking view of Lake Victoria with a vantage viewpoint of the stunning beauty of the surrounding villages. We also had an opportunity to join local traditional dance, who warmly welcomed us with the traditional todo dance.

Rituals and Practices
Kit Mikayi serves as a pilgrimage site for followers of the Legio Maria sect and is known for various rituals performed by the Luo community.
Legio Maria, or the Legion of Mary, is a religious movement. It split from the Roman Catholic Church in the early 1960s in Kenya. Lodvikus Simeo Melkio Ondetto and a mystic woman, Mama Maria, started the movement. Legio Maria’s foundation is rooted in local Luo myths and spiritual experiences.
Origins and Formation
Legio Maria began with some dissatisfied Catholics in south Nyanza. They felt disconnected from the Catholic Church’s teachings. In 1963, after mystical experiences, Ondetto claimed to be the Son of God.
This led to his excommunication from the Catholic Church. This moment marked the formal establishment of Legio Maria on April 9, 1963, at the home of John Baru in Suna Migori. The movement quickly attracted followers who resonated with Ondetto’s teachings and the promise of divine intervention.
Beliefs and Practices
Legio Maria adherents believe that Simeo Ondetto is the reincarnation of Jesus Christ and Melchizedek. They see him as a Black Messiah sent to promote God’s glory on Earth.
Followers venerate Mama Maria, a central figure in their faith. They equate her to the Virgin Mary in traditional Catholicism. The church’s vibrant worship services include singing, dancing, and prophetic utterances. Congregants often report miracles and healings. This reinforces their belief in their leaders’ divinity.
Growth and Expansion
Legio Maria began as a small group. Now, it has millions of followers in Kenya and other African countries, such as Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, and Sudan. The church has many congregations. It attracts diverse new members, including former Catholics seeking spiritual fulfilment.
These include sacrifices during times of famine or drought, where elders would conduct ceremonies seeking blessings for rain and good harvests.
The site has been recognized by UNESCO as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding due to its declining traditional practices.
